A Walking Exploration Around Moody Pond

The Green Handbook

Kary Johnson and Margaret Worden are members of Friends of Moody Pond. They have undertaken the “A Walking Exploration Around Moody Pond” project to support the mission of FMP. The goal of this project is to document and share the beauty in the biodiversity of life around our beloved pond. We hope that others who enjoy walking around Moody Pond will join us.

“A Walking Exploration Around Moody Pond – The Green Handbook” aims to provide a self-guided opportunity for people walking around Moody Pond to notice, identify, and report the diversity of species that live around Moody Pond.

The method used to identify locations used in this project was to reference the 40 telephone poles around Moody Pond, take their GPS coordinates, and assign site numbers to the space between them. This Green Handbook contains the odd numbered sites – walking clock-wise around the pond, on the left against traffic. There are a total of 80 sites.

Each odd numbered site, 1-79, has a dedicated page in the handbook. The page lists some of the species found on the site, photographs, a “Featured Species,” and a few interesting facts.

Over time, we hope that fellow nature lovers will help us expand the species lists for each site. This continuing work will support FMP’s commitment to preserving and protecting Moody Pond and its surrounding neighborhood as a treasured resource for the enjoyment of the Saranac Lake community by documenting the diversity and monitoring for potential threats caused by invasive species, climate change, human impact, etc.
